. new developments in the irs targeting of conservative groups. president obama is expected to meet with treasury officials on that matter today. rich edson is live from the white house with the latest. hey, rich. >> the white house says the treasury secretary tim geithner among other -- jack lew, will be here from the white house that steps should happen at the internal revenue service after the inspector general report was issued last night, basically saying they developed the criteria, these red flags for conservative organizations applying for tax-exempt status. they used these criteria for a good part of the 18 months it slowed down the applications. the inpick tore general's report didn't exactly point out who was responsible for developing these criteria. that is why so many investigations are ongoing, criminal with the department of justice and a number of others going on in congress. the white house talking a bit about this after the president issued the statement last night though they offered few specifics what the president actually wants to see happen at the irs. >> he

lives. >> welcome to the journal editorial report. i'm paul gigot. that was president obama this week reacting to just one of the controversies swirling around his administration. news that the internal revenue service targeted conservative groups for special scrutiny in the 2012 election season. the latest scandal has revived partisan behavior and reinforced many people's fears about government who run amuck. joining the panel this week issues columnist and deputy editor, dan henninger, washington columnist, kim stossel, and senior editorial page writer, collin levy who has been following this story for us. what were these audits about? what were they looking for from these groups? >> well, they were looking for basically anything they could get from these groups. they wanted donor information. they wanted information about members. they wanted just about everything but the kitchen sink. and when you look at this, it really was expensive and sophisticated. of the 170 groups that were targeted, the treasury report found that about 58% of those had no -- i mean no reason for that to be

conservative groups. can you tell me whether obama for america, organizers for america, occupy wall street, or any other progressive group has been targeted in the last three to four years by the irs? >> at the beginning of the investigation -- i do not know what, if any, groups were targeted. i am not in a position to say on the basis -- we are in the beginning stages of the investigation. it wasyou find out if only conservative? i think this is important. it is rather strange it is only one medical group and not the only -- not the other. can you find out for our committee? >> the investigation would be designed to find out which makes were looked at, sure if they were looked at that it was done on an appropriate basis. if the what -- if it was inappropriate, to hold people accountable. that will be done whether or not they are conservative or liberal, republican leaning or democratic leaning. >> if you will find out -- if you find that they were only conservative, can you find out why they were only conservative groups targeted? i will read you a quote that you stated about your contemp
